Mahalakshmi Tech Campus: Modernizing Curriculum Implementation for 21st Century Engineering Education
The Mahalakshmi Tech Campus, affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu adapts the curriculum of the universities affiliated colleges but at the same time makes changes to make the procedure of education more effective. They have identified three dynamic stages in the process of implementing curriculum throughout the model:
Strategic Preparation
Strategic Preparation
At this stage, departments send their proposed faculty requirements to the concerned body, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) which then analyses these proposals and checks infrastructure preparedness for the next semester. The academic calendar is then developed subsumed within which the semester calendar, major events as semester start, internal formative and summative assessments, and unit delivery and completion timelines are plotted.
Curriculum Design & Development
Curriculum Design & Development
At this stage, courses that students choose on their own are selected, and preferences of the respective faculty are obtained. As with the subject area, faculty expertise is used to determine subject allocation. The curriculum implementation incorporates a variety of contemporary teaching methodologies
Blended Learning
Blended Learning
An effective hybrid of conventional face-to-face teachings with other online elements, as the approach in carrying out lessons is easily adaptable in terms of time and space. Descriptive learning experiences include technology tools and multimedia materials that are incorporated to increase interest.
Project-Based Learning
Project-Based Learning
Teaches students to engage in projects that help the world and develop problem solving, creative and practical solutions. There is industry relevance and practical exposure attached to projects.
Flipped Classroom
Flipped Classroom
Students study lecture content and materials in advance through videos and other support online materials; the class meetings are used as formative discussion sessions, problem-solving sessions, and collaborative learning sessions.
Gamification
Gamification
Applies features of game design to enhance its effectiveness as a teaching strategy. These are the aspects of alterability of the learning-teaching process, which imply the involvement of such elements as a problem, a prize, or competition.
Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning
Such as; industrial tours, guest speakers, and practicums that take classroom knowledge and relate it with the market reality to enhance students’ learning experience.
Implementation & Assessment
Implementation & Assessment:
These tools are used in this stage to check and improve on the implementation of curriculum through the use of Faculty Meetings, Class Meetings, Student Feedback and Regular Assessments. Such assessments seek to justify that applied educational procedures are successful and relevant to learning goals.
The engineering institution Mahalakshmi Tech Campus aims at developing the concept of engineering education through innovation and for the benefit of the students to equip them to handle the modern world jobs.
